Forget-me-not

Forget-me-nots symbolize true love and respect. When you give someone these tiny blooms, it represents a promise that you will always remember them and will keep them in your thoughts. They are also considered a symbol of fidelity and faithfulness.

Why is it called forget-me-not flower?

That name refers to the shape of the leaves. According to a Greek myth, Zeus thought he had given all the plants are name, whereupon a small blue flower shouted “forget me not!”. The supreme god decided to make life easy for himself by giving the plant that name.

There are many meanings behind the Forget-Me-Not flower. For starters, it can be used to symbolize remembrance – both during a parting or after a death. It can also be used to symbolize a connection that endures all challenges and measure of time.

Germans have the claim to the most common name used for this flower, so, naturally, there’s a fabled story of two lovers walking along the Danube River (a river running through Germany). The couple come upon the bright blue blossoms along the riverbank, and the man retrieves the flowers for the woman, but unfortunately, they fall in and are swept away. He tells her not to forget him, and thus, the name was born. It is said that his beloved wore those flowers in her hair until she died, and so in addition, they also symbolize faithfulness towards your love.

According to another story, Jesus was sitting on the Virgin’s lap and said that He wished that everyone in the future got the chance to see her beautiful eyes. He then touched her eyes and waved His hand over the ground, as a result, the blue forget-me-not bloomed. Planting these in your garden would signify that the Virgin’s eyes are watching over you.

Forget-me-nots have also been claimed by the following: the Freemasons, the Armenian Genocide that started in 1915, and the Alzheimer’s Society use them as an icon to raise awareness for the disease and support for caretakers.

Forget-me-nots also symbolize protection and luck, and it’s believed that they have the power to protect humans against witches. King Henry IV of England used this flower symbol as his lucky charm during his exile in 1398, these flowers became his very symbol after he returned with them.

Are you born in September? Yes?! Well, you better not forget forget-me-nots, because they’re your birth flower. And if you live in Alaska, the reason doubles because they were chosen as the Alaska state flower in the year 1949.

While a red flower speaks romance and white blooms represent purity as well as innocence, blue blooms signify trust and the commitment that goes on. Sending blue flowers means that you are expecting to keep the romance burning and alive for years.
