Nihilism in perspective with Johan
First
nihilism is the rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief
that life is meaningless. And nothing matters in this world.
Absurdism id
the belief that a search for meaning is inherently in conflict with the actual
lack of meaning, but that one should both accept this and simultaneously rebel
against it by embracing what life has to offer.
If Johan
truly had been a nihilist, the series would’ve ended after the first few
chapters, because he would have done absolutely nothing, as there is no meaning
to anything.
The more suitable title for Johan would have to be absurdism. In many scenes do we see Johan toy with other people. In a sense of absurdity, he sees no value in anyone, because the idea of this world to him is preposterous. That’s why everyone is equal to him, that’s why he sees no need to side with Nazis or become the next, world leader, he has no proper ideology. Johan simply does not care, as everyone will die and everything will go in vain. It would be absurd to even try, but he still has his own way of making objectives, killing Franz Bonaparta and everyone who knew him, this goal in general would view d absurd. I would say Johan understands humanity’s despair better that anyone, for somebody who had that many near-death experiences, life would mean like a toy.
